Thinking of upgrading to iPhone 5? Trade-in your old handset for cash!

by Ryan Reclaim on 09/27/11

The rumors are swirling about the launch of the new iPhone 5.  Apple has scheduled a press event for Tuesday, October 4th and lots of people have questions.  These include:

  • What will the new iPhone's features be?
  • Will Sprint finally have the iPhone and will they make it available on their unlimited plan?
  • Will there be a "Nano" version of the iPhone?
  • What will be the release date?

But one of the biggest questions is what should you do with your old iPhone or other handset when you upgrade?

The best answer is to recycle it and get trade-in value in exchange.  The EPA estimates that there are over 300 million unused wireless devices sitting in consumers homes right now!  That is equal to 3 per household.  Ultimately, many of these handsets - including old iPhone 3, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone4 end up in landfills where they end up polluting our water.

But American consumers have other options.  Many companies and retailers offer the ability to trade in their iPhone or to recycle cell phones and earn cash at the same time!

Typically, the consumer will log-in to a wireless phone trade in website, rate their device, and then take advantage of free shipping supplied by the recycling company to get their cash rebate for trading in their iPhone.  The iPhone trade in or other mobile phone trade in rebate is processed and the customer will receive their check within less than a week.  The mobile phone then has all of the customer's data securely removed and is then refurbished and/or recycled in an environmentally responsible manner.

So everybody wins!  The customer gets a new iPhone5, the cell phone recycler gets to refurbish and resell an old device, and the planet is protected!

How To Check for Water Damage with iPhone before Trade In

How To Check for Water Damage with iPhone

If you want to tell if your iPhone 3g has liquid damage, the first two places you should check are the headphone jack and the iPhone charger port.

The Earphone/headphone Jack = Put a flashlight or shine a light in there, directly in the center is a sticker which should be white. If it is red, then it means it has touched some sort of liquid there.

The Charger Port – Place a small pin light or flashlight around the charger port, underneath it there is also a sticker toward the inside where there’s a little opening, that sticker should be white as well. If it is red, this indicates it has some sort of liquid damage.

Please Keep in mind, moisture can cause these stickers to change color as well, so you won’t know 100% unless you open up the phone and look for any rust on the main board or any components. There are also two stickers, one on top half and one on lower half of the main board which indicate water damage (white = good, red = water damage). Again keep in mind, just because these might be pink or red, it could just be because someone always left their phone in the bathroom while taking a shower and the heat and moisture caused these to go red or pink, doesn’t mean the phone is bad or doesn’t work, you would have to test the phone out to ensure it has actually been dipped into water.

How To Prepare A Mobile Cell Phone for Recycling or Trade In.

by Ryan Reclaim on 08/15/11

R3 Mobile Phone Trade in Tips – How To Prepare A Mobile Cell Phone for Recycling or Trade In.

Don’t forget to call the carrier and cancel the service on your phone with your cellular provider. Only phones that have been deactivated with their wireless carriers are eligible for recycling, so it's important to complete this first step. This also ensures that if your phone is refurbished and put back into use, you won't be charged.

Delete any personal information such as contacts or other stored memory on your phone. Delete all contacts from the address book, and memos and pictures you may have stored in your phone.

Remove the SIM card, if the phone is equipped with one. If you don't know if your phone has a SIM card or don't know how to remove it, simply take your phone to a local wireless store and have a staff member assist you. Removing the SIM card will further ensure that none of the phone's previous information will be passed on to a future user.

Include all of the accessories, if you are trading in your mobile phone, include the chargers and cables to get the maximum trade in vale for your cell phone. You can check in the Trade in Value with our without the accessories being included.

Small Changes Make a Big Difference in Savings

by Ryan Reclaim on 08/15/11

Small Changes Make a Big Difference in Savings

Unplugging and making small changes, adds up to lower costs a makes big difference. Making small changes in our everyday lives can make a large impact on the environment. Whether it's bringing your own bag to the grocery store, or pouring your coffee into a mug instead of a paper cup, recycling plastic water bottles, paper and cans or plugging into a smart power strip, we can all make a difference in the future of our planet. Greenpowersaverstore.com is dedicated to providing customers with eco-green friendly products that will reduce our carbon footprint by reducing our energy consumption and best of all save money.

Here are ten tips to eliminating Vampire Standby Power everyday in your home.

  1. Turn off your computer at night so it runs only eight hours a day—you’ll reduce your energy use by 810 KWh per year and net a 67 percent annual savings.
  2. Use a Kill-A-Watt device to measure your electronics' power consumption. It can actually be kind of fun (and definitely enlightening) to run around your house and see how much juice each piece of equipment takes. You'll likely be surprised.
  3. Plug your computer into a smart surge protector with a master control outlet, which automatically senses when the computer is not in use and cuts power to it and all your peripherals.
  4. Purchase flat-screen monitors—they use significantly less energy and are not as hard on your eyes as CRTs.
  5. Purchase an Energy Star–compliant computer. Note that laptop models use much less energy than desk top units.
  6. Plan your computer-related activities so you can do them all at once, keeping the computer off at other times.
  7. Power off your monitor when you are not using it instead of using screen savers.
  8. Do not leave the computer running overnight or on weekends.
  9. Turn off all printers and peripherals unless you are using them consider using an ink-jet printer—although a bit slower than laser printers, inkjets use 80 to 90 percent less energy.
  10. Forgot the screen saver—it doesn’t save energy or your screen unless you’re using an old monochrome monitor.

Additional Tips to Save Energy - Easy low-cost and no-cost ways to save energy and keep money in your pocket.

  • Install a programmable thermostat to keep your house comfortably warm in the winter and comfortably cool in the summer.
  • Use Energy Star® labeled compact fluorescent light bulbs. Turn off lights when not in use, open curtains and blinds to provide more natural sunlight.
  • Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher's drying cycle and wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.
  • Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.
  • Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into smart power strips, which automatically turn these devices off after a period of time. Or turn existing power strips [non-smart] off when the equipment is not in use (TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of vampire power).
  • Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120°F and install a tank insulation blanket.
  • Take short showers instead of baths.
  • Look for the ENERGY STAR label on home appliances and products. ENERGY STAR products meet strict efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Insulate ducts, walls, attic, windows and doors.

Reduced utility bills more than make up for the higher price of energy-efficient appliances and improvements over their lifetimes. In addition, your home could bring in a higher price when you sell.

Eliminate Standby Power and End Daily Energy Waste. Smart Power Strips are easy to use and fully automatic. The smart power strip pays for itself in as little as 2 to 3 months with a minimal investment.  Smart Power Strips also provide surge suppression to protect your electronic devices including PC’s, peripherals and laptops. Cut Costs and Increase Revenue with 5 Eco-Friendly Techniques for Wireless Retailers

by Ryan Reclaim on 08/12/11

Ask virtually any business person and they will tell you that they would like to do their share to help preserve the environment reduce greenhouse gases and “go green”. The rub comes when it is perceived that “going green” costs them money or negatively impacts productivity.

The truth is that learning to save the planet while doing business requires some thought, preparation, and training, but there are many ways that a retail company of any size can reduce their negative impact on the environment while either growing revenue or reducing expenses.  Here are five simple programs that you can use to get started with running a more eco-friendly retail business for yourself, your customers and the planet.

1. Recycle, reduce and reuse. Copy and printer paper is an easy place to start your business’ greening efforts. If a document is for internal use only, email it rather than print and distribute it. If your company generates a large amount of paper, have it shredded and sent to a recycler. There are any number of ways you can save a few trees once you decide to try.

You can also save other items, buy pen refills instead of new pens. Put a box by the soda machine to collect empty aluminum cans. Donate them to your local fire department, or use the money earned to pay for an employee party at the end of the year. Recycle printer and toner cartridges – in fact many office supply chains will now offer you discounts for doing so! Diligently search for ways to use less and recycle what you can. If every retailer does something, it can make a huge difference on the environment.

2. Encourage your customers to recycle as well.  Many wireless and electronics retailers are now offering customers the ability to trade-in cell phones or other electronics in exchange for getting instant rebates for products at their stores.  Some retailers have been able to generate up to 15% more sales and foot traffic by offering these electronics recycling programs.  Many of these programs offer the retailer commissions on the trade-ins plus MDF and Co-Op advertising dollars.  And electronics retailers don’t have to be the only ones participating….any retailer can utilize these programs.

3. Buy eco-friendly and recycled items. In many cases they cost the same as non-recycled products. You can find copy paper, business cards, paper towels and many more items if you look for recycled products. The more you can green items you can buy, the better for the environment overall.

4. Save electricity and water. There are many numbers of ways to reduce the amount of electricity and water your business uses each month. Learn to turn the lights off in rooms that aren’t in use. Use energy-efficient bulbs and lamps. Look for energy-efficient machinery and equipment. Cut the temperature on the water heater by a few degrees or even replace it with a smaller one! Teach your employees to be as conscious of the energy they use at work as they are at home.

5. Take it online. If possible, allow employees to telecommute to save gas and reduce the toxins in the atmosphere. Use online training and e-learning opportunities instead of hosting classes that require employee travel. Encourage carpooling by providing a bulletin board where employees can post a note if they’re looking for a ride. Buy office supplies online rather than driving to the office supply store.

There are a myriad of ways to save the planet by using more eco-friendly and environmentally-conscious business practices. Examine your current business practices and look for ways to reduce your impact. You’ll feel better about your retail business, and your grandchildren will thank you for your concern.

Improve your stores profitability with a recycling program

by Ryan Reclaim on 08/03/11

Are you a wireless retailer or a consumer electronics retailer who is looking to increase sales revenue and to improve gross profit?  R3 Trade-ins offers retailers a program that lets them accept cell phone trade-ins and electronic trade-ins items from their customers.  The money for the trade-in can then be used to help the customer purchase additional accessories or other products in your store.

Here is how it works: The customer brings in their old mobile phone or other electronic item into the store; your retail sales representative then appraises the product and issues a store gift card or instant rebate in the amount of the product’s value; R3 Trade-ins then reimburses the retailer for the amount of the trade-in every month and even provides co-op advertising funds to help the retailer promote the program!  They also have a terrific customized e-learning retail training program that is available 24x7 on a training portal for their dealers.  Plus they offer free shipping for the traded-in electronics.  Their reporting is also very robust so that the dealer can performance manage their retail sales associates behavior on the floor.

Scott Dantis, the CEO of Jabsr , the company that is running the R3 Trade-in program said “This is a great way to make some green by going green!”  And I think he is right!  Trade-in rebates for mobile phones can exceed $100 and customers can also trade-in laptops, ipods, digital cameras, gps systems and more.  I know that when I looked around my house I found over 10 unused electronics items that would have otherwise gone in the trash.

It is great to see companies like Jasbr/R3 helping the environment and helping retailers to make more money at the same time.  If you are interested in starting an electronics recycling or mobile phone recycling program you should consider reaching out to R3 Trade-ins or similar companies.
